On 16 November the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania (RTCL) adopted a decision to suspend the free reception of the channel “RTR Planeta” on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania for 3 months due to the persisting violations of the Audiovisual Media Service Directive and the Law on the Provision of Information to the Public of the Republic of Lithuania.
The decision was taken on the basis of the investigation carried out by the RTCL and the independent experts. It was established that the programme „Duel. The Programme of Vladimir Solovjov“ broadcast on 16 October 2016 disseminated instigation of war, discord and incitement to ethnic hatred.
This was the third infringement of the mentioned legal acts by the same channel in less than a year‘s time. Therefore, after having fulfilled the due procedures as set in the EU legislation, the RTCL applied the foreseen sanctions and temporarily suspended free reception of the channel.
The channel „RTR Planeta“ is registered in Sweden, but the content is produced and disseminated by the Russian company VGTRK. The free reception of the channel or its separate programmes was suspended in the territory of Lithuania not once before due to the dissemination of information prohibited by law.
The decision will come into force on 21 November.
