On April 2 the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania adopted the decision to temporally suspend certain programme parts of the channel “RTR Planeta” from being re-broadcast in Lithuania.
In accordance with the Law on the Provision of Information to the Public the Radio and Television Commission decided to oblige the transmission operators of television programmes falling within the jurisdiction of the Republic of Lithuania to suspend, for 3 months re-broadcasting of parts of the programme from countries other than EU member states, states of the European Economic Area and other states that ratified the Convention of the Council of Europe on Transfrontier Television which are included in the television programme “RTR Planeta” on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.
The decision has to be sanctioned by the Vilnius Regional Court.
This decision was taken based on the expertise of the Office of the Inspector of Journalist Ethics on the disseminated content of the channel “RTR Planeta”.
Both the Inspector and the Commission identified that the part of the programme “Vesti nedeli” (Weekly news), broadcast by “RTR Planeta” on the 2nd of March deliberately published biased and tendentious information justifying violence against civilians, instigating military actions and hatred between Russians and Ukrainians, justifying military intervention of the sovereign state, and annexation of part of its territory.
In its decision the Commission stated that the published content belonged to the kind of information which is forbidden to be published in Lithuania by law.
