Recently the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania has been considering the compliance of the content of the Russian programmes with the laws of the Republic of Lithuania more often and upon noticing the probable violations is taking the necessary steps to eliminate them within the limits of its competence.
In today’s meeting, the Commission decided to start investigation of the information disseminated by the channel “REN TV Baltic (Lithuania)”, which belongs to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom and is available in the territory of Lithuania as well.
On 19 November this year, the mentioned channel broadcasted the programme “The Territory of Misrepresentation” (Teritorija Zabluzhdenii) the content of which in most cases was biased, not based on evidence, incited ethnic discord and military mood, by which potentially violated the provisions of Art. 19.1.3 of the Law on Provision of Information to the Public. If this information is found in breach of the requirements of the said law, the Commission will temporarily, for 3 months suspend rebroadcasting of programmes from countries other than the EU Member States, states of the European Economic Area and other European states which have ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Transfrontier Television, which are included in the television programme “REN TV Baltic (Lithuania)” on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.
Earlier in November the Commission started the investigation of the content regarding other two channels available in Lithuania, i. e. “RTR Planeta“ and “NTV Mir Lithuania“ on the grounds of the possible breach of the requirements of the Law on Provision of Information to the Public. The Commission had concerns regarding misrepresentation of information, violation of journalist ethical principles, provision of biased information, probable incitement to hatred and war. The Commission had already taken steps for all necessary procedures. If the competent authorities and independent experts did confirm and establish that both channels disseminated the prohibited information again (these programmes were suspended earlier last spring), the Commission in accordance with the legal procedure will be able to take more stringent measures to stop the retransmission of the whole channels in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.
