Today the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania convened for a special meeting to review and specify its decision, which was adopted on 7 January to temporally suspend from being rebroadcast on the teritorry of Lithuania parts of the programme of the channel „Ren TV Baltic“.
In accordance with the LR legal procedures the decision comes into effect only after it is sanctioned by the Vilnius Regional Administrative Court.
The court announced its ruling on the 9th January. It did not sanction the Commission’s decision on the grounds of insufficient disclosure of particular violations.
The decision was based on the conclusions of the competent institution, the Inspector of Journalist Ethics and independent experts, who concluded that the published information in the channel’s programme “The Territory of Misrepresentation” (Teritoria Zabluzhdenii)” of 19 November 2014, produced by the Russian Federation, disseminated tendentious and partial information on the recent events in the Ukraine, instigated war and incited hatred to Ukrainians, legitimate government of the Ukraine and the EU and NATO states, supporting its sovereignty and integrity.
According to the experts’ conclusions, the published information met the criteria listed in Article 19(1) (3) of the Law on the Provision of Information to the Public of the Republic of Lithuania and is prohibited from being published in the media.
The Commission decided to obligate the rebroadcasters of television programmes, who disseminate the television programme “Ren TV Baltic” to suspend, for 3 months following the coming into effect of this decision, rebroadcasting of broadcasts from countries other than the EU Member States, states of the European Economic Area and other European states which have ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Transfrontier Television, which are included in the television programme “Ren TV Baltic” on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.
If this decision is sanctioned by the Court, it will come into effect the next day after it is published in the Register of Legal Acts.
